How the Mind Creates Anxiety
My work is based on the studies of the brain performed by Nobel Prize winner, Professor Gerald Edelman. Prof. Edelman devoted 30 years to researching how the brain functions. His conclusions show how the 10 billion-plus cells arrange themselves into groups, forming “maps” that correspond with our experiences, both good and bad.
Some situations or triggers, such as open spaces, crowds, shops, etc., produce stronger physical responses from us. The more intense the response—sweaty palms, a racing pulse, or an all-out panic attack—the faster the brain learns from it. The response becomes hardcoded into our cells. Every time you’re in the same situation thereafter, the brain follows its internal map in determining how to respond, producing the same symptoms.
In simple terms. our brain is like a sophisticated computer. Computers use programs to perform tasks. Brains repeat formulas they’ve learnt through experience just like a computer running a program. The difference between our minds and a computer, however, is that we can learn. The program can adapt to new circumstances or stimulus. The more intense the learning, the faster the adaptation. You probably don’t think about how you drive a car, because the movements required have become automatic for you. But if you get into an accident, however minor, the trauma will rewrite your automatic movements to prevent the same situation recurring.
Panic attacks are created the same way, only they stop us from living a full life. Every negative condition that exists can be traced back to a self-limiting set of programs. We aren’t born with fear; it is a learned behaviour. What is learned can be unlearned.
